AI search visibility is the work of making a business appear, and get cited, when someone asks ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, Perplexity or Copilot a question you should be the answer to. It is not a replacement for SEO. It sits on top of it, and it depends on three things classic SEO never had to care about this much: whether the machine can resolve who you are, whether your content is written so a passage can be lifted and quoted, and what the rest of the internet says about you.
How AI answers actually pick who to cite
Each engine retrieves differently, and the plan has to cover all of them:
- Google AI Overviews draw from Google's index. Ranking still matters, but so does having a self-contained passage that answers the question directly.
- ChatGPT search and Copilot draw on search indexes, Bing's among them, plus OpenAI's own search crawler, OAI-SearchBot. Being well indexed in Bing helps, so we submit the sitemap in Bing Webmaster Tools as standard. It is not a requirement for ChatGPT to find you, and it is not a guarantee that it will.
- Perplexity runs its own crawler and leans heavily on third-party sources: review sites, directories, Reddit, published lists. A perfect site with no outside mentions loses to a worse site that appears on five lists.
What all of them reward: a clear entity (name, location, founding date, services, credentials, consistent everywhere), direct answers in the first sentences under a question-shaped heading, specific numbers with a stated basis, named authors with verifiable experience, and freshness dates that are real.
What we do
Entity audit and setup. Organization, Person and Service schema built as one graph. Name, dates, location and credentials made identical across the site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, directories and review platforms. This is the step most agencies skip and it is why their clients never get named.
Crawler and index access. robots.txt set deliberately for each AI crawler (search crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot are separate from training crawlers such as GPTBot, and you can allow one without the other), Bing Webmaster Tools and IndexNow set up, llms.txt published, rendering verified so every page is real HTML.
Citable content. Existing pages rewritten so the important questions get their own sections with the answer first. New pages for the questions your buyers ask an AI before they ever search for a vendor: what it costs, how to choose, X versus Y.
Third-party presence. Review profiles, directory listings, expert quotes, list placements and forum presence, because the engines trust what others say about you more than what you say.
Prompt tracking. A fixed panel of 20 to 30 prompts run monthly across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and AI Overviews, logging whether you appear and what gets cited. This is the scoreboard; rankings alone don't tell you.
What changes on your website
Usually less than you expect. A schema graph, a robots.txt update, a handful of pages restructured so headings ask the question and the first paragraph answers it, a pricing page with real numbers, and author pages for the people who do the work. The heavier lift is off-site.
How long it takes
Entity and technical work lands in the first month. Content restructuring runs over two to three months. Third-party presence compounds over six to twelve. Most clients see their first named appearance in a prompt panel within 60 to 90 days, usually in Perplexity first.
Who does this
Shane K. Penrod has been doing SEO since 2000 and has watched every major retrieval shift since then, from directories to PageRank to featured snippets to this one. PPC & Co also builds AI tools for agencies, including its own reporting platform, so the team understands how these systems retrieve and rank from the inside. AI tools and reporting.
What it costs
Quoted per client after an entity and visibility audit, because the amount of off-site work varies enormously. The audit is free with a paid search or SEO engagement, and quoted on its own otherwise. Pricing.
